"Nuclear Pasta" could be the strongest material in the universe
Neutron stars consist of several layers and, just like the Earth, the outermost zone is called crust. It is formed by the outer crust and the inner crust, and everything extends about one kilometre from the surface.
Physicists think that the atoms on the surface are not very dense at all, but when they go down into the outer crust, they compress further until the atoms are so close that their electrons escape and their core forms a tight mesh structure. Even deeper in the inner bark, and these cores are so narrow that they begin to organize into strange shapes, and forms that look a lot like noodles.
In an article in Physical Review Letters, physicists Charles Horowitz, Andre da Silva Schneider and Matt Caplan call it "the layer of pasta".
This layer of dough has a thickness of 100 to 250 meters but is so dense that it can contain more than half of the total mass of the crust. This means that it is important to understand because knowing how your density is presented will help you predict how you might behave. To do this, the researchers created computer simulations of things and discovered the power needed to break.
It turns out that breaking nuclear noodles requires a lot of energy - 10 billion times the force needed to break the steel, to be exact.
